Calvin University is starting its 2025 football season with a major facility upgrade: a brand-new AstroTurf® RootZone™ 3D3 premium playing surface. Installed in time for fall training camp, the new turf marks a milestone in the development of the Knights’ athletic program and underscores the university’s commitment to athlete safety, performance, and success.
Head Football Coach Trent Figg describes the new turf as “the largest classroom on campus,” where lessons extend far beyond football. “We are working to develop and mentor champions for life,” he said. “This field gives us the best environment to do that—thanks to AstroTurf and their team for delivering a world-class surface ready for day one of camp.”
The turf system offers top-tier durability and safety features to support intense practice and competition. Calvin’s partnership with AstroTurf Great Lakes aims to provide the highest standards in playing surfaces, and Todd DeWolfe, President of AstroTurf Great Lakes, expressed pride in helping create a facility that enhances the student-athlete experience.
This new football field installation is part of a broader multi-phase project by Calvin University to bring on-campus football facilities to their campus for the first time. The new turf field provides a premier practice surface, while the team will play their 2025 home games in the newly opened on-campus soccer stadium, which has been temporarily configured for football games.
Future phases include building seating for approximately 3,500 spectators, press boxes, additional fan amenities, and infrastructure that will establish a permanent home for football games and elevate game-day excitement and campus engagement.
