Stephen and Ayesha Curry have been named Chief Dream Ambassadors for Realize the Dream as Eat. Learn. Play. launches a long term partnership focused on improving education, play and community conditions for children in Oakland. The collaboration began with a day of service at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School and includes a pledge of one hundred thousand volunteer hours dedicated to strengthening support for local youth and families.
The partnership links the Currys’ commitment to their hometown with a national effort led by Martin Luther King III, Andrea Waters King and Yolanda Renee King to mobilize one hundred million hours of service by 2029. For Oakland, the initiative centers on the needs that influence childhood development, including access to safe places to play, spaces that encourage learning and activities that promote connection within neighborhoods. Since 2021, Eat. Learn. Play. has brought together thousands of volunteers for schoolyard projects and community events that directly affect young people across the city.
The service event at MLK Elementary represents the twenty first schoolyard transformation completed by Eat. Learn. Play. in the Oakland Unified School District. Volunteers installed new playgrounds, multi sport courts, soccer goals, murals, gardens and outdoor learning areas shaped by student input. The school holds a place in the King family’s history, as Coretta Scott King visited the campus in 1972. The upgraded spaces are expected to provide students with daily access to environments that support learning, movement and exploration.
For youth sports leaders, parents and coaches, the partnership highlights the growing role community investment plays in supporting athlete development. Improved schoolyards give children consistent places to run, practice, develop coordination and build confidence. The commitment of volunteer hours also reflects a model of shared responsibility, reinforcing values often expressed in youth sports programs such as teamwork, leadership and perseverance. As access gaps and facility challenges continue to affect participation across the country, projects that strengthen neighborhood resources help create more equitable pathways for young athletes.
Realize the Dream’s activation in Oakland demonstrates how service efforts in one community connect to a broader national movement. By aligning local needs with a call for unity and volunteer engagement, the initiative positions service alongside education and play as essential components of youth development. The Currys’ leadership brings added visibility to the work and underscores the importance of stable, well supported environments for children.
The partnership between Eat. Learn. Play. and Realize the Dream establishes a foundation for ongoing investment in Oakland’s youth.
